For a time in the early 1990s, poised to become the first new country superstar of the 1990s, according to industry experts.

His first two nationally-released country singles, "A Better Man" and "Killin' Time," were the No. 1 and 2 country singles of the year, according to Billboard magazine. His third single, "Nobody's Home," was Billboard's No. 1 song of the year for 1990. All three were No. 1 hits, though only the third stayed longer than one week at the top of the charts.
